Obstetrics and Gynecology

Obstetrics and Gynecology (often abbreviated as OB/GYN) is a medical specialty focused on the female reproductive system, pregnancy, and childbirth. It encompasses both surgical and medical care related to women’s health.

Obstetrics specifically deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This includes prenatal care, managing labor and delivery, and addressing complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.
Gynecology focuses on the health of the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and vagina. It involves diagnosing and treating conditions like menstrual disorders, infections, and cancers of the reproductive system.

In essence, OB/GYNs are doctors who specialize in caring for women throughout their lives, from puberty to post-menopause, with a particular focus on reproductive health and pregnancy.
